The Las Vegas Sun is looking to recognize the best of the best in high school sports across Southern Nevada.
We need an assist from you to make it happen.
The Sun is seeking nominations for the Sun Standout Awards, our annual prep sports awards show at the South Point Showroom that honors the top games, athletes, moments and more from the past year in high school sports. The show, in its eighth year, is May 19.
Do you know a high school student-athlete who is excelling in both the classroom and on the playing field? What about a prep athlete who is making a positive impact in our community?
And, of course, what about that athlete who is the best in their sport?
Modeled after ESPN’s ESPY Awards, the black-tie-optional event includes awards such as Male Athlete of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year, Scholar Athlete of the Year and Citizen of the Year.
We’ll highlight the best of the best over 12 categories.
The show has previously featured top wrestlers, tennis players and girls’ flag football players. We’ve honored athletes who’ve become first-round picks in the MLB First-Year Player Draft, and those who are now in the NBA.
This show is the only one of its kind in Nevada — and nationally — and something we are extremely proud of.
“I’m honored to be part of such a meaningful night for our community’s student-athletes,” said Ray Brewer, the Sun’s managing editor and the show’s host. “Helping grow the Sun Standout Awards into a can’t-miss event on the prep sports calendar is one of the highlights of my career because we’ve been able to tell the story of countless athletes through the program.”
The show has also become popular with Las Vegas’ professional sports teams. The Golden Knights and Raiders have contributed to the festivities in various ways.
The Raiderettes dance team has helped distribute awards; the Golden Knights have sent their mascot, “Chance,” to the show.
The show has been hosted all eight years at the South Point.
“As a father of daughters who have competed in sports and state titles, I find this event in Las Vegas truly amazing,” said Michael Libonati, the South Point’s entertainment director. “Honoring these kids is incredible, and it’s my favorite event of the year—a time to celebrate with families and schools.”
Nominations close April 11.
