A Las Vegas company is providing free water filtration systems to local nonprofit groups that serve families and children.
The Ronald McDonald House in Las Vegas was the first to receive a system from Multipure, said Amber Simo, the water filter company’s brand manager. The house provides lodging for the families of children receiving medical treatment at local hospitals.
Through its Pure Foundation, Multipure has been finding ways to give back to the community since 2012, Simo said.
When the Ronald McDonald House built a second facility in 2022, Multipure offered filtration systems to provide purified water for children with compromised immune systems, said Alyson McCarthy, CEO of the Ronald McDonald House in Las Vegas. The house received eight filtration systems, she said.
The carbon block filters capture more than 80 contaminants such as lead and chemicals while leaving behind healthy minerals, Simo said.
The filters can last up to a year before they need to be replaced, Simo said. Each filtration system Multipure is donating costs $760.
The company provides free installation and filters for the life of the unit, she said.
Children who are immunocompromised, such as a child with a chronic heart condition or a child undergoing chemotherapy, need pure drinking water, McCarthy said.
Whatever illness or injury a child is going through has put a high level of stress on their body, and they can’t fight additional threats, she said.
In Nevada, there is naturally occurring arsenic in the water, Simo said. Though it’s only in small amounts, the filters ensure it does not interfere with the treatments children are getting.
Local public water officials work to make sure the drinking water is safe, “but we have to take an extra layer of precaution,” McCarthy said.
The donation from Multipure allows the charity to use the money it would have spent on water filters to provide a place to stay and meals for families, she said.
“It’s our job to take as much pressure off their plates,” McCarthy said. “We provide all the comforts of home … so that they can do what is most important to them.”
Simo said the company has always been drawn to helping young people and families.
“We’ve all just gravitated toward working with children. …It’s just a really good time being able to work with them and see the difference that you’re making.”
