LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Several people have thanked the Napili Noho on Maui for all they have done to help people after the devastating wildfire in August 2023.
FOX5 visited the site a few months after the fire started. It is located just a short drive from where the fire burned in Lahaina.
“Mahalo from the bottom of our hearts for everything you have done for the community,” said one person on the Napili Noho Facebook page.
Volunteers have helped many people left homeless after homes and apartments burned. They have organized and distributed food and other necessities.
“By summer we had distributed over $15 million in food, medical supplies, hygiene products, and more. We could not have done this without the help of countless committed volunteers and staff,” read the Napili Noho’s recent Facebook post.
The post said the site was always intended to be temporary and will be officially shutting down as Lahaina transitions from immediate relief to long-term rebuilding.
FOX5 talked to two people from Las Vegas who went to Maui. They ended up volunteering at the Napili Noho.
A man nicknamed “Savage” told FOX5 in 2023 that he spoke to his church in Las Vegas, Awaken Church, about going to Maui to help people.
He planned to visit for only five days but stayed for several months. He lived in a tent.
Savage caught up with FOX5 this summer around the one-year anniversary of the fire.
“I let our volunteers know that we’re here far beyond resources. We’re here to spread love and Aloha. We’re here to uplift and encourage as folks move forward,” said Savage.
Las Vegas resident Melonee Lujan also traveled to Maui and helped lead recovery efforts at the Noho.
“Housing is a real scare. The trauma of the families having to go in and out of homes, out of hotel rooms not knowing how long they have shelter. It’s just traumatic having to move. I know families who have moved eight different times since the fire,” Lujan said in November 2023.
The Napili Noho has not given a specific date of when the location will close.
