LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Metro Police are looking for a suspect targeting businesses mostly in the Spring Valley area, hitting 29 all around Las Vegas since June, three in just 15 minutes early this morning.
It’s leaving business owners frustrated, annoyed and looking for answers.
The only crunchy thing inside Gyu + restaurant should be the togarashi potato chips.
Instead the door at Gyu + in Chinatown is a pile of sharp glass, and it cuts deep for managing partner, Luis Desantos.
“As an operator, it sucks, because it’s our third week. People are excited to come see us after a journey of ups and downs, and then we get this type of situation,” Desantos said.
Metro Police explaining in a press conference Wednesday afternoon how the suspect seems to methodically enter businesses in the early morning hours and avoids as many cameras as possible.
Three businesses were broken into Wednesday morning, two of them are affiliated with Desantos. The brazen break-in doesn’t sit well with him.
“When you get victimized with certain things, you feel violated,” Desantos said.
For those wondering why it’s so difficult to catch this crook, Deputy Chief Jose Hernandez explains the suspect, “always completely covers up, covers his face, covers his hands, particularly with what we’ve identified as very thick type gloves.”
For its part, LVMPD says its taking an agencywide approach, using all department resources to get an arrest.
But nearby business owner, Colin Fukunaga of Fukuburger is skeptical of the amount of break-ins, and hopes the silver lining that comes from this, is that more people speak up.
“A lot of the business owners in the Chinatown area are notorious for under reporting crimes, not very helpful for the victims that are helping,” Fukunaga said. “I don’t think there’s any lot in Chinatown on the on Spring Mountain Road from Polaris all the way to Rainbow that has not got hit multiple times within the last month.”
Fukunaga adds a Metro substation in the area would help cut down on crime.
FOX5 has asked repeatedly if Metro is planning on adding a substation in the area, including at that recent press conference. No word yet. In the recent months, they have increased police presence in the area.
FOX5 also asked Metro Police for a dollar figure on how much these 29 businesses have lost, and will update this story when we learn more.
