LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Nevada State Police say a deadly motorcycle crash that shut down the access road to Red Rock Canyon is now a hit-and-run investigation.
Troopers have identified a driver, who was already in custody on unrelated DUI charges, as a suspect in the crash.
An initial investigation revealed that a multi-colored 2003 Yamaha V Star 1100 motorcycle was traveling north on State Route 159 near Mile Marker 3. A silver 2021 Dodge Ram pickup was traveling behind, but failed to reduce its speed and struck the motorcycle.
The motorcycle then overturned on its left side, and the rider was ejected. The pickup fled south before troopers would later arrest the driver, 40-year-old Iurie Trofim, on suspicion of drunk driving.
The motorcyclist was identified as Carson Guedes Heath, a 55-year-old male from Las Vegas, Nevada. He would die at the scene.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
Trofim made his first court appearance on Wednesday, Aug. 28, and was given a $10,000 bail with special requirements upon release. He is due in court again on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
