LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Nevada National Security Site responded to a wildfire burning in a remote area of the site Thursday afternoon.
According to a spokesperson, smoke was reported in the northern section of the site around 3 p.m. Responding NNSS fire and rescue units observed the fire burning around 9,000 acres in a remote area.
The “Ribbon Fire” has burned through two contaminated areas so far, though the radiological exposure from the area poses no immediate threat to the public, NNSS officials say.
No structures or assets on the site are in danger, and no injuries have been reported. All site employees are accounted for, as well.
The fire is also currently sitting in a drainage area, which officials note has greatly reduced its ability to spread.
Air assets from the Bureau of Land Management arrived Friday, and are expected to begin dropping fire suppressants shortly.
