LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The North Las Vegas Police Department tells FOX5 that an officer is uninjured after a suspected drunk driver side-swiped his car Thursday night.
Around 8:45 p.m., an NLVPD officer was on patrol when he found a two-vehicle collision on southbound I-15 near Cheyenne Avenue. The officer then instructed both vehicles to move onto the shoulder while waiting for Nevada State Police to respond.
Police say a gray Volkswagen then approached the crash area but failed to maintain its lane and side-swiped the patrol vehicle. The officer, who was outside of the vehicle, was uninjured.
The driver, identified as 52-year-old Yamila Perdomo-Hernandez, was suspected of impairment and arrested. She was booked into the North Las Vegas Community Correctional Center for DUI-related charges.
“We want to remind the community to don’t drink and drive, find a sober driver, and to slow down and move over as you approach stopped emergency vehicles,” NLVPD noted in a social media post. “As we are approaching Labor Day weekend (here soon), NLVPD will be joining forces with other law enforcement agencies in the valley to look for impaired drivers, reckless driving, and distracted drivers. We encourage alternative options like using a ride-share if you’ve been drinking, find a sober driver, have a plan before you start drinking, and to drink responsibly!”
