LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A shooting incident that turned into a barricade near a Las Vegas middle school caused parents to wait to pick up their children for hours.
Las Vegas police said the shooting happened around 11:31 a.m. near the 4400 block of South Durango Drive near Peace Way.
Then, a male suspect barricaded himself at a residence in the 4500 block of South Bonita Vista Street and refused to exit, police say. Around 4:32 p.m. on Thursday, officers took the suspect into custody.
Police told FOX5 they don’t believe there were any hostages with the suspect. SWAT and crisis negotiators were on scene and no injuries have been reported.
The barricade happened within half a mile of Clifford J. Lawrence Junior High School. FOX5 confirmed with CCSD Police that Lawrence Jr. High School was under a soft lockdown until about 4:40 p.m..
Several parents told FOX5 they waited in traffic to pickup their children for hours. They say they were eventually able to pick up their children in the school’s office after showing an ID.
“I heard the sirens. We live in the apartments over there, and heard all the sirens and everything. Then, we found out, my grandson texted and said they are on lockdown and he didn’t know why,” Patricia Puckett said, whose grandson attends Lawrence Junior High School.
Other parents confirmed they got the bulk of their information about what was happening on campus from their children, despite CCSD’s new cellphone pouch policy for middle schools.
“Thank god his phone wasn’t in the bag. His phone wasn’t in the bag because it’s turned off all day long. And when he needed it he could call me,” another parent, who wished to remain anonymous, said.
