LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A suspect was arrested in a deadly hit-and-run crash that killed a man while he was gassing up his car, Nevada State Police announced Tuesday.
The crash happened July 5 around 2:12 a.m. on the transition ramp from westbound 215 to northbound I-15. Police said a blue Ford Explorer was pulled over to the side and the driver, 40-year-old John Garay, was putting gas in the car when he was hit by another car. Garay was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nevada State Police said a red 2018-2020 Nissan Kick car was suspected of being the car involved. When police identified the vehicle, they notified the media that they were looking for the call.
Investigators also looked at surveillance video and identified the same Nissan being towed to a body shop for repairs. Nevada State Police said the damage was consistent with the crash.
Troopers said the driver was identified as 25-year-old Kiyana Mote from Las Vegas. A warrant was issued for Mote’s arrest on Aug. 7 and she appeared in court Tuesday. According to court records, Mote’s bail was set at $25,000.
Though police didn’t note if impairment was suspected in the crash, court records show Mote was ordered to submit to drug and alcohol monitoring, must abstain from drugs and alcohol and is not allowed to drive.
Additional details of what led to Mote’s arrest weren’t immediately available. FOX5 has requested public records regarding the arrest.
State Police thanked the public for assisting in the investigation that led to the arrest.
