LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – This week, Las Vegas — and the world — say goodbye to the beloved Mirage.
Sunday night was the last night guests could book a room before the hotel’s full closure on Wednesday.
When the first true Las Vegas mega-resort opened back in 1989 with its South Seas theme, it ushered in a new family-friend era on the Strip with its Dolphin Habitat, Siegfried and Roy White Tiger show, and of course, iconic erupting volcano.
Now only the volcano remains, and its shows are numbered.
Erupting hourly four times each night blasting fire, smoke, water, and light, the volcano is one of the biggest family-friendly free attractions in Las Vegas. For Yoseline Constantino, born and raised in Vegas, it’s been there her whole life.
“My memories of the Mirage are coming here as a little kid and coming to see the volcano,” Constantino reminisced. In December 2021, Hard Rock International announced it would buy the Mirage from MGM Resorts International and add a guitar-shaped hotel to the front of the property to sit right next to the Strip. To do so, the volcano would have to be demolished to the dismay of many.
A Change.org petition online to save the volcano gathered more than 11,000 signatures but the volcano is now in its final run.
“This is a historic place, been here for years and it’s going to be gone. I am sad to see it go,” shared Larry Dupard, a Las Vegas local.
“We took a long walk from Circus Circus one time to just see the volcano… Very loud nice explosion fire, the steam coming up was intense,” Chris Jacobs from Sacramento recounted. Jacobs says it’s always on his to-do list on trips to Vegas, which have been too many to count, and he is glad to be in Vegas during the Mirage’s final days and to see the volcano show one last time.
“Going to go in there now make sure I get my last goodbyes,” Jacobs told FOX5 outside the property.
The Mirage will host a closing ceremony on Wednesday starting at 9 a.m. to honor the history and legacy of the first true mega-resort on the Strip. The property will then officially close at 11 am.
