LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – FOX5 learned that two Nevada state prisons are having problems with A/C.
Officials from the Nevada Department of Corrections said two swamp coolers inside High Desert State Prison and Northern Nevada Correctional Center “malfunctioned.”
Officials contribute the issue to high temperatures and hard water in the system along with humidity. They say these factors reduced the effectiveness of the coolers.
They say commercial-sized swamp coolers, along with industrial fans, should arrive this week.
Officials are still working to determine how many inmates are affected.
“Temperatures within the units are being monitored daily. If temperatures approach 85 degrees or become too uncomfortable, offenders will be transferred to open cells throughout the state,” NDOC said.
Officials say cold drinking water and ice will be provided in units with non-functioning swamp coolers until repairs are completed.
