LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Belongings covered in ash are scattered around an apartment complex one day after a fire tore through the building.
According to Clark County fire officials, the building has a history of large fires. It’s called the Townhome Villas located near Maryland Parkway and Desert Inn Road.
“It would’ve been nice to know when I moved in that there’s a chance this place might get on fire,” Townhome Villas resident, Christopher, says.
Christopher moved into the complex Wednesday while the fire was burning in an adjacent building.
“I show up here with all my stuff to find all the roads blocked off, fire trucks, police officers, ambulances, everything,” he says.
Clark County Assistant Fire Chief Brian O’Neal says certain construction features, like a common attic space, make the building susceptible to large fires, like Wednesday’s.
“That’s some bad news to hear,” another Townhome Villas resident, Raymond Brown, says. “There’s a lot of older people in here, so that’s not good at all.”
Brown has lived in the complex for one year, but says he was unaware of its history.
“Hopefully they do the things they are supposed to do around these buildings to make it safer for the tenants that live here, especially the older ones like myself,” Brown says.
FOX5 reached out to Clark County to ask how many large fires have happened at the complex, and for more details about what makes the building susceptible to large fires.
FOX5 also reached out to the Townhome Villas.
Neither group has responded yet, but offices may be closed for the Fourth of July holiday.
