LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department emphasizes to valley residents to not use 911 to report illegal fireworks.
Metro invited Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, the Clark County Fire Department, Clark County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick and Mayor Carolyn Goodman to spread awareness of the dangers of illegal fireworks.
Deputy Chief Thomas Touchstone with CCFD said that the fireworks stands throughout the county have been approved. Approved fireworks will have the “Safe and Sane” logo on them.
In the press conference, law enforcement said that buying fireworks at an approved stand in the county also goes back to good causes like nonprofits and valley schools.
If a resident sees any illegal activity regarding fireworks, Metro says to report it to ISpyFireworks.com. Metro says that the website will not immediately have police respond to the area, but will allow police to see hotspots of illegal activity in the future.
911 calls about illegal fireworks causes a strain to dispatch, Metro says. It also prevents dispatch from receiving calls of immediate emergencies.
Illegal activity regarding fireworks will end up with a $500 minimum citation.
Valley law enforcement along with Clark County will also start their “You Light it, we write it” campaign on the Fourth of July.
Touchstone said illegal fireworks are those that shoot in the air and explode. He says that the explosion could cause bush, grass and tree fires in Las Vegas dry climate.
“We have a great community here,” Goodman said. “We are very serious about keeping people safe. Illegal fireworks are not tolerated here. There are children, also veterans, who have been impacted by illegal fireworks.”
