LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Next Tuesday, Las Vegas voters will choose a new mayor.
For the first time in a quarter century, a Goodman will not be on the ballot. This week, FOX5 sits with the three leading candidates to replace Mayor Carolyn Goodman.
FOX5 wraps up this series with Las Vegas City Councilman Cedric Crear.
Huck: Why do you want to be mayor?
Crear: I’ll be the first Vegas-born mayor in the history of our city. I have a long history of Las Vegas, obviously. You know, I started out dealing blackjack on graveyard at Palace Station. I’ve worked in slots, I’ve worked in racing, sports book, Done everything in the industry. So this is my city.
Huck: If you win this, what do you think are gonna be the primary issues that you’ll have to deal with in a first term?
Crear: I work very, very well with Metro. I’ve traveled the country with them, looking at best practices in mental health and in homelessness. So we have to continue that relationship. We have to expand that relationship, making sure officers have the tools they need to be successful and to keep our neighborhoods safe.
Huck: Finally, on the subject of diversification of the economy, that’s been the buzzword here for the many years I’ve been here. Do you think any progress has been made? How do you push that ball forward?
Crear: From being born and raised here, to someone that worked in our number one industry in our state for 10 years from from the ground up, from dealing blackjack to being the director of marketing for a few properties, nothing’s going to take the place of our hospitality industry.
I love it. It’s what drives us, and that’s what we need to keep keep pushing and keep promoting. But we do need to diversify our economy. We need to get people ready, trained, prepared for these entry-level jobs in the tech fields that are coming here. We need to bring companies into our community so that we can get them into those entry-level jobs that pay you a good wage that, gives you good benefits. I’m a firm believer. You give a person a good job, it changes their life, their family’s life, and their community’s life.
