LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department K9 stabbed in the line of duty on Friday is in stable condition and expected to live after he was airlifted to an animal hospital for emergency surgery.
On March 29 at approximately 1:08 p.m., LVMPD dispatch received a report of an armed man on the 1200 block of South Las Vegas Boulevard. Officers arrived in the area and learned the subject was armed with a knife and he refused to exit an apartment.
During this time the man started a fire in the apartment and the incident was deemed a barricade. SWAT, crisis negotiators, and K9 units were requested.
Shortly after SWAT and K9 arrived, the suspect exited the apartment armed with a knife. He quickly closed the distance on officers who deployed less-lethal options, including K9 Enzo. The K9 bit the subject, but the man stabbed the dog multiple times. SWAT officers took the suspect into custody.
Enzo was immediately rushed to a nearby veterinary hospital, before being transported by the LVMPD air unit to a veterinary trauma hospital. According to LVMPD, Enzo is currently in stable condition and is expected to live.
He will remain in the intensive care unit overnight to continue to receive treatment. Enzo is a Belgian Malinois and almost three years old. He has been with LVMPD for approximately one year.
Medical was immediately requested for the suspect, who was suffering from self-inflicted stab wounds. He was transported to UMC Trauma where he is currently in critical but stable condition.
