LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A Las Vegas man told police he shot and killed his stepfather after discovering his toiletries in a trash can, an arrest report revealed.
The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Alexander Renteria, was arrested last Tuesday when police arrived in the 10100 block of Royal Mint Avenue. Officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department also discovered the victim, his stepfather Christopher Harris, in the suspect’s bedroom, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Harris was immediately taken to UMC Trauma, where he later died from his injuries.
LVMPD detectives investigating the shooting spoke with Renteria after his arrest. During the interview, Renteria claims the conflict began when he arrived home from work and discovered several of his toiletries in a trash can.
After removing them, Renteria spoke with his mother and told her that he suspected Harris of throwing them out. He then went to speak to Harris, which devolved into an argument.
During the argument, Renteria told officers that he had left to his room and retrieved a Glock handgun, which he held while the fight continued. He then returned to his bedroom and retrieved an AR-15 rifle.
Harris, who had followed Renteria to his room, stood in the doorway. Renteria fired a warning shot into the nearby wall.
Harris attempted to grab the gun from Renteria, who then shot him in the hand and left leg.
Detectives asked Renteria why he did not close his bedroom door when the argument had escalated. He replied that “it would have likely just made things weird the next day,” the report reads.
The report also noted that Renteria also expressed remorse about the shooting.
He is currently in custody at the Clark County Detention Center and is due in court for a bail hearing on Nov. 12.
