LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The UNLV men‘s soccer team picked up its third straight shutout and extended its unbeaten streak to five matches after a 0-0 Senior Night draw vs. Grand Canyon in Sunday’s WAC meeting at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
This is the second consecutive season the Rebels (4-6-4, 1-1-4) have strung together a five-game undefeated streak in league play. The result against the ’Lopes (5-6-3, 2-2-1) completed a pivotal four-point weekend for the Scarlet & Gray as they continue to vie for position among the top six teams in the WAC standings.
Backing the Scarlet & Gray‘s sixth clean sheet of the season, sophomore Hugo Lemos reeled in his fifth shutout of the 2024 campaign after making three saves in the full 90 minutes. Together, Lemos and the Rebels’ backline stretched their consecutive minutes without conceding a goal streak to 331 minutes.
Despite the lack of scoring, the Rebel attack created near-scoring opportunities as displayed by their four shots on goal. Two of those came within two minutes as sophomore Lucas Gelebart attempted a bicycle kick in the box off junior Jonah Craig’s 36th-minute free kick and LeBeuf headed a threatening shot off a cross in the 37th minute. Sophomore Tyler Ware placed two shots of his own on frame in the 53rd and 55th minutes.
Before playing their last home match, seniors James Anderson, Lincoln Aquino, Louis Hiepen, Brophy Howard, Nico Lopez, Theo Minard, Gabe Sanchez, and Jimi Villasenor were recognized.
“I’m really proud of the senior group leaving us next year. They’ve given us so much, and their families have as well, so that was special tonight to have everyone there,” said UNLV Head Coach BJ Craig.
UP NEXT: UNLV will take to the road for its final three contests of the regular season, starting with Thursday’s 6 p.m. PT/7 p.m. MT match at Utah Valley.
