LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The City of Henderson has identified four problematic residential streets where drivers routinely break the speed limit. Now, they are trying to change that. How they will make that happen was the topic of the Citizens Traffic Advisory Board Thursday night.
The city conducted speed studies conducted on four older, wider streets all with 25 MPH speed limits:
- Pioneer Street from Boulder Highway to Coronado Drive
- Emden Street from Anchor Drive to Warm Springs
- Calico Ridge Drive from Lake Mead Parkway to Galleria Drive
- Patti Ann Woods Drive from Greenway Road to College Drive
At the busy corner of Calico Ridge and Galleria, school crossing guards say they see close calls every day.
“You have to really holler like stop, stop, stop…just real bad speeding here,” Romana Rush, a crossing guard at Calico Ridge and Galleria shared.
“When they are coming down the hill and you’ve got someone coming this way, it is like that close. It is scary,” Teri Thompson, who also works as a crossing guard at Calico Ridge and Galleria contended about the number of speeding cars she’s seen nearly collide.
Andre Noronah lives up the hill on Calico Ridge Drive.
“If you are going 40 miles per hour, you don’t even know what is on the other side of that,” Noronah explained.
Noronah is advocating for speed bumps to be added to slow people down. For now, Henderson’s Citizens Traffic Advisory Board has agreed to add striping and a bike lane to the side of the residential road.
“At least it gives me a little bit of a buffer zone,” Noronah stated.
Mallory White also welcomes stripping being added to Pioneer Street.
“When I am getting out of my vehicle, people are whizzing by me so fast and it freaks me out,” White revealed.
Each street has a number of changes proposed such as real-time speed signs or adding roundabouts or speed bumps, and of course handing out more tickets to drivers.
Speed bumps would be the next step for some of the streets but the city will try other solutions first. They also say adding speed bumps would need support from the neighborhood and the Henderson fire department.
