LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Amid ongoing budget problems, the Clark County School District Board of Trustees could hire an outside firm to perform an audit of its financial operations.
According to board meeting documents, the board will consider a $50,000 contract with the Council of the Great City Schools, a group that reportedly assists other large school districts in cities like New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
The CGCS said it’s work could include:
- A review of data related to the district’s finance operations
- A four-day site visit to interview district staff, and
- A report outlining next steps “to improve efficiencies and enhance the effectiveness and strategic value of the district’s finance operations
The group said the review would be a flat fee of $50,000 to cover the four-day site visit, plus the completion of the report. They said the report would be made available no later than eight weeks after the review.
As of Thursday, the school district has yet to confirm whether the district is facing a budget deficit and by how much. However, FOX5 has reported on schools cutting costs by eliminating teaching positions and cutting back on paper use.
FOX5 has repeatedly asked CCSD Interim Superintendent Dr. Brenda Larsen-Mitchell and Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo for interviews regarding the budget situation. The school district public information office never responded regarding the interview requests of Larsen-Mitchell. Lombardo’s office has yet to confirm an interview with FOX5.
The board is expected to discuss the contract, and provide a “budget update,” in its board meeting on Oct. 10.
