LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Henderson police said children watched as a husband stabbed his wife and another woman in the Cadence area.
FOX5 obtained an arrest report for 30-year-old James Atkins. He faces two counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon.
Police said the incident started Tuesday at 5:10 p.m. near Scarlet Sparrow Street and Pacific Sparrow Street.
Dispatch received a call that instantly hung up. Moments later, dispatch received another call from the same phone number.
Police said it was a woman saying her husband is beating her. According to the arrest report, dispatch heard her screaming through the phone.
At 5:12 p.m., dispatch received another call saying that Atkins had stabbed two women. The caller said a woman was stabbed in the neck.
When officers were arriving to the scene, they saw a car driving past at a high rate of speed. When police stopped the vehicle, they saw one of the two women stabbed.
The Henderson Fire Department responded to that vehicle and transported the woman to the hospital. Police said she was at a different house until she heard yelling and attempted to help Atkins’s wife who was stabbed in the neck.
When officers arrived at the suspect’s residence, they were notified that children could be inside. When police entered, they would find large amounts of blood in the kitchen and a child alone upstairs.
Officers followed a blood trail from inside the residence toward the Las Vegas Wash and Wetlands Park. There, officers would find Atkins on the ground with stab wounds in the neck, wrist and leg.
During Henderson police’s investigation, they gathered surveillance footage. Police said children in the neighborhood were watching as Atkins stabbed his wife.
Atkins is due for a status check on Oct. 1 at 9 a.m.
