LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – FOX5 continues our coverage of a Henderson community that must fix its pipes within two weeks or see homeowners forced out. The city gave them notice on Monday.
“The Homeowners Association has failed this community on every level, and that is unacceptable to us. That infuriates me,” fumed Henderson Mayor Michelle Romero.
There’s now a push for a solution to keep people at the Somerset Park Townhomes near Pabco and Sunset in Henderson in their homes.
The city says sinkholes created by the community’s broken water system are unsafe and some 85 families could have to move out fast if something doesn’t happen quickly.
“I was like, what? The tenth?! Move on the tenth of September?,” recounted Tollette Harris, who has lived in her Somerset Park for 17 years after she got the letter from the city Monday telling her if the pipes aren’t fixed.
“I’m a creature of habit. I like to stay where I stay, and if not, having to move from my place, that’s not right,” Harris asserted. Harris spoke one-on-one with Romero Thursday.
“We are here as a city to help them in anyway we can…We have every team in the city working on this night and day,” shared Romero.
Mayor Romero tells FOX5 the goal now is to keep people in their homes. While the city may be able to make the repairs, ultimately the HOA must pay.
“It’s a private property managed by a Homeowner’s Association, so yes, they are responsible for this,” Romero contended.
“Befuddle, confused, distraught, all of those things. Someone should have known, should have said something, right?,” questioned Victor Ramirez. Ramirez closed on his home just last week, now he’s unsure if he will have to move backout in less than two weeks.
“I have some family here in state. I already talked to them. They said I could move in,” Ramirez revealed. Those who call Somerset Park Townhomes home, hope some sort of plan can quickly be reached.
“I don’t think, but you never know, you got to leave it in the hands of God,” Harris stated.
Why isn’t there money to fix the pipes? FOX5 has been digging into the former property management company accused of embezzlement. Residents tell us Heritage Property Management was in charge for 14 month safter COVID.
FOX5 learned Heritage Management has seven complaints filed against them by five HOA’ s and a case with the BBB. Their website and phone number also no longer work. This is something our FOX5 investigative team is continuing to dig into.
The current HOA management company in charge of the community, CAMCO, sent this statement to FOX5:
“CAMCO was brought on recently to assist the Somerset Park community board after the previous management company was shut down and fined by the Nevada Real Estate Division.
Our team has worked on behalf of the new board on solutions with multiple departments in the city including code enforcement and the ombudsman — all in an effort to resolve a number of issues.
Due to financial stressors based on the community’s budget shortfalls and past management, the board is facing some budget issues and CAMCO is efforting solutions. It also needs to be noted that any of our expenditures on behalf of communities go through multiple approvals. “
