LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Soon, we finally may get clarity on the future of Sam Boyd Stadium, the former home of the UNLV Rebels football team.
The Nevada System of Higher Education will hear a proposal by UNLV to sell the property, according to board meeting agendas for the Sept. 5-6 meetings.
UNLV says that the university “does not have development or operations plans for the [Sam Boyd Stadium] property” following the building of Allegiant Stadium, where the football team currently plays with the Las Vegas Raiders.
The university said it plans to sell the property back to Clark County, who was the previous owner of the property.
“Clark County, a former owner of SBS property, is one of the few interested acquirers who could comply with the public purpose deed and reversionary restriction,” UNLV representatives write. “Clark County also holds the authority to review and approve entitlements for the property.”
Documents provided to NSHE said that the annual operating costs for Sam Boyd Stadium in 2023-24 were approximately $500,000.
UNLV commissioned multiple third-party appraisals, with the most recent from May 2024 valued at $11.7 million. In Feb. 2023, Clark County appraisers valued the land at $0. UNLV hopes to sell the property for $5 million.
In early 2023, FOX5 reached out to UNLV several times to ask about Sam Boyd’s future. We asked if the land could be sold, if the stadium will be torn down or if UNLV has received any offers to use the facility for other purposes. At the time, Director of Public Affairs Francis McCabe said, “Sam Boyd Stadium is not operational, and UNLV is considering options for the future of the facility and the property.”
Since the football team moved to Allegiant Stadium, the property has been used as a COVID-19 testing site and as a host for some commencement ceremonies.
The university said they hope to sell the property in about 6 months.
