LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Sphere has lit up Las Vegas for more than a year now and on its one year anniversary, debuted outside music. Upset neighbors who live nearby went to a meeting Tuesday asking that music have some restrictions as it can be heard from their homes 24/7. There are vacation rentals, apartments, and the condo towers near the Sphere.
Wednesday, FOX5’s visited the Park Tower Condos to listen to what residents, some who have lived there for decades, are hearing.
“It has not been shut off since the Fourth of July. Twenty-four hours a day…We have lived here, some of us since 2001, 2002 and this is our home,” shared Mike Watson.
Watson says that first show with sound on the Fourth of July came as a shock.
“Excruciatingly, painfully loud,” Watson described. Watson recounted it rattled windows of the high-rise towers, shook the floors, and kept people from sleeping.
Now the Sphere wants a noise waiver to hold more special events, up to 18 a year.
FOX5 was at the Paradise Town Advisory Board meeting Tuesday night where neighbors, board members, and Sphere officials tried to hash out an agreement on the noise level. Watson and other people who live in the 84 condos say they understand blasting music on holidays like the Fourth or New Year’s but 18 times a year is way too many. “We are going to be subjected to very high decibel levels 18 times a year. I don’t know about you I go to bed at 10 o’clock. I’m not going to bed at 10 o’clock those 18 nights of the year because the noise will be way too loud,” Watson contended.
The Paradise Township Advisory Board did approve the Sphere’s request for a noise waiver. It now moves on to Clark County Commissioners.
Clark County Commissioners will decide on the Sphere’s noise waiver on September 4th. The Sphere is in Commissioner Tick Segerblom’s district. Segerblom is declining to comment until it goes before the commission.
There are also a number of businesses and restaurants behind the condos FOX5 reached out to Wednesday. None said they are being impacted by the sound at the Sphere.
