LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – One Las Vegas neighborhood is dealing with street racing and reckless driving. Many Summerlin residents telling FOX5 it happens nearly every night.
Now, we are seeing it on video, along with a first-hand account from a neighbor who says he didn’t think would be here to tell his story.
The noise is one thing. The danger neighbors say some street racers pose night after night in Summerlin West is another.
Take it from one anonymous resident who is now telling neighbors to be vigilant.
“I had a gun pulled on me. I really thought I was gonna die right there. I thought he was gonna shoot me.”
That moment came after the man tried to get a video recording of the street racers, specifically of the license plates so Metro Police can identify the drivers.
The same concerned resident saying, “These guys are taking it to that level because they know if I take a picture of their vehicle or get a video of them, it’s going to be used against them. And then somehow Metro will find where they live just by the license plate.”
Police saying they welcome all video and photo evidence.
“We’d love to for you to share that with us and give us more intelligence and information so that we can tackle this problem with you,” said Captain Greg Phenis with the Summerlin Area Command. “We would love to come up and help you tackle this problem.”
Captain Phenis says it’s important to report illegal activity the moment you see it. Several neighbors telling FOX5 they have. But to date, the captain says they’ve only received five calls for street racing.
As for when to call 911 as opposed to the non-emergency line 311, Captain Phenis says, “If you believe people are actively racing and someone may be injured, call 911, and that’ll get us a quicker response.”
That’s exactly what the concerned resident is afraid of as he says the racers tear along streets like Desert Foothills, Sky Vista, and Far Hills just west of the 215, and a stone’s throw away from the Summerlin Area Command station.
“I’ve called Metro numerous times. I just decided to stop because I’m just going to wait for somebody to smack down a wall, run into someone’s home, and it’s just going to be me just standing there yelling at the top, going, ‘Told you so.’”
Metro PD telling FOX5, if it’s not in their system, then it hasn’t been reported. In the meantime, they say they’ll continue their random patrols.
The resident we spoke to is also encouraging residents to call in or show up to the substation with their concerns.
