LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Tuesday, the Clark County Commission amended location restrictions of liquor stores.
Before a unanimous vote, a county code says a liquor store is not allowed to be less than 1,500 feet away from a school or church.
Now, county commissioners could evaluate liquor store locations on an individual basis to decide it they will lower it. Commissioners say this amendment does not remove the barrier requirement.
“There are things that are deemed under statute to be schools that are not really what we’re thinking,” said Commissioner Justin Jones. “They’re just in shopping centers, and the same thing goes for churches. It nearly tanked an already built liquor store that was ready to open in my district as a result of that.”
Commissioners listened to public comment before the vote. One Las Vegas Valley woman said the amendment does not add to the beauty of communities.
“To place liquor stores closer to schools and churches where parents and grandparents are trying to take their kids to school… We want them to stay in school, we don’t want any obstruction,” said Quincy Robinson. “There’s a lot of other items that are developments that can be done to support our beautiful community. Liquor stores at this point really don’t.”
