LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – “Useless grass” is on its way out in Southern Nevada, and the City of Henderson is taking action to fall in compliance.
The Useless Grass Removal Law, AB356, states all useless grass, that is decorative or can’t be played on, must be removed by the end of 2026.
For parks in the City of Henderson, the city’s Municipal Forester, Preston Goodman, says they worked with the Southern Nevada Water Authority to determine which grass will be removed.
“We went facility by facility, and looked at each facility very closely and mapped out and agreed upon what the nonessential areas were going to be,” Goodman says.
About a third of an acre at Anthem Hills Park was removed on Thursday. It will be converted to xeriscape, which Goodman says will save 780,000 gallons of water or year.
Anthem Hills is park 10 of 50 that’s part of this project for the city. All parks are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.
Goodman says once completed, the city will save 150,000,000 gallons of water per year.
“We want future generations to have enough water to maintain these parks, so we’re doing everything we can do today to prepare for tomorrow,” Goodman says.
