LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump is certainly bringing up questions about security measures taken for political events.
FOX5 spoke with a valley resident who, during his law enforcement career, had to provide security detail for two presidents.
David Kohlmeier lives in Las Vegas and was a police officer for 17 years.
During his time with NYPD, he provided security detail for president Bill Clinton and then years later while working for Henderson Police, he was tasked with providing security for President Barack Obama when he visited Lake Las Vegas.
Kohlmeier gave FOX5 his perspective on the security measures that go into protecting a president or former president during a public event.
“Normally state and local police will do outside permitter normally secret service takes over the inner perimeter they also even work with TSA,” Kohlmeier said.
Kohlmeier said when Obama was in town in Lake Las Vegas, he was part of the outside perimeter security detail and said there were cops every few hundred feet.
Kohlmeier tells us what he thought could have went wrong during Saturday’s Trump rally moments before the former president was shot.
“This happened within a few minutes of the speech starting by him, normally everyone is still on their game, I couldn’t say it was an officer tired it was several hours, he just started speaking i just think there was not enough security there was not enough policing around the entire perimeter in order to basically ensure safety,” Kohlmeier said.
He also gave his perspective on an outdoor venue versus indoor.
“So that is a controlled environment , sometimes a controlled environment is better because everyone is going through security detail, they are going through TSA and wanded,” Kohlmeier said. “Here the outside perimeter was the problem someone got elevated.”
“I personally believe, he is not the president right now, the president of the United States probably has a lot even better extra security secret service, let’s say the A-team where Trump has probably has the B team the B-plus team, where the president has a few hundred more security detail in Secret Service,” Kohlmeier said.
Kohlmeier did tell FOX5 he was present at the Trump rally that took place in Sunset Park on June 9. He claimed there was a sniper in one location and not every where else.
He said even as a former cop, he did not feel the safest in this particular environment.
