LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The tripledigit temperatures are dangerous and potentially deadly if Las Vegas Valley residents and visitors are out in it for too long.
However, many in the valley are forced to call the outdoors their home.
On Monday, the City of Henderson’s public response team with code enforcement checked on people who are outside.
Water is a must during the hottest days of the summer, but for our most vulnerable population, it could be hard to come by.
This is why members for the public response team is going to parks, trails, parking lots to give out cans of water, electrolytes and any other necessities.
“We are making sure we are compassionate for anyone living on the streets,” Ian Massey the public response manager with the City of Henderson said.
The team of 14 officers try to find anyone needing help during the most dangerous days of the summer.
“People out in the elements, we can’t get them hydrated enough, so we are trying to give them water and electrolytes,” Massey said.
Since last week, the team has handed out over 400 cans of water, which is just a glimpse of how many people did not have any.
“People living unsheltered here, there is no cooling off,” Massey said.
On Monday, many of the people who the officers helped told them they did not have water since the day before.
The team will make multiple visits each day until the sun goes down wherever they can and their efforts will continue throughout each day this week.
The team also offers rides to the nearest cooling stations as well.
