LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said they struck an armed suspect who was threatening customers inside an east valley business Wednesday.
Police said the shooting happened in the 6400 block of Boulder Highway near Russell Road. Officers responded to the area after a call regarding a person with a knife.
Police said this was the second non-fatal shooting of the year.
The suspect was identified as 62-year-old Robert Kunhart. When officers arrived at the scene, police saw him armed with two knives, a box cutter and folding knife.
Officers made contact with him at the parking lot and an action team was formed to prevent him from entering the business with “several” inside.
Police said they gave Kunhart multiple commands, but he ignored them. Officers started using multiple low-lethal strikes toward him, but police said he was “unfazed” by them.
He continued to approach police and said, “shoot me.” Because he continued to approach, officers Ashley Ravelo and Johnny Patino, both 32, fired and struck him.
Ravelo fired one round, according to police, and Patino fired five rounds.
Immediately after the shooting, police started life-saving measures until medical arrived and started providing treatment.
Kunhart faces two counts of attempted murder and one count of resisting an officer.
