LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Las Vegas police said they shot a 41-year-old who was attempting to pick up a knife outside of a northwest valley residence.
Police said they were responding to a home invasion in the 200 block of North Valley Drive around 9:42 a.m. This is near Lake Mead Boulevard and Rancho.
In a call to dispatch, a citizen could be heard saying, “He’s going to kill us.” This prompted a STAR protocol and patrol officers were dispatched.
31-year-old Miguel Rodriguez was the first to arrive at the scene. Police said he got in contact with the residents of the home who said that the suspect, identified as Matthew Tindall, broken into their home while armed.
In police investigation, it was revealed that Tindall attempted to stab the two residents of the home. However, the residents were able to make Tindall flee by throwing furniture at him.
Police said Tindall went into the backyard of the residence but then fled. A second officer then arrived at the scene with a low-lethal firearm.
Moments later, the two officers heard yelling from a residence next door. Police observed Tindall and three residents outside. Tindall was seen in a physical altercation with another male citizen.
Police said Tindall dropped the knife, but tried to pick it back up. At this moment, Rodriguez fired five rounds at the suspect, striking him. Tindall was armed with an 8-inch kitchen knife.
Medical aid was provided. Police said this is the first nonfatal officer-involved shooting of the year. This is the sixth shooting so far in 2024 including officers, at the same time last year, there were only three.
Tindall faces two counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon, home invasion, battery and resisting an officer.
