LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A 49-year-old was shot and killed by Las Vegas police after pointing a rifle toward them.
Police said the shooting happened Thursday in the 200 block of North 9th Street, between Ogden and Stewart Avenue.
Dispatch started receiving 911 calls around 12:07 p.m. Assistant Sheriff Yasenia Yatomi played one 911 call where we could hear an apartment resident saying that someone pointed a rifle at their head through a door.
Police identified the suspect as Seth Wilson. Police discovered he lived in the apartments on the third floor of the building.
When officers arrived, they started searching for the suspect. Yatomi said a sergeant on scene was able to get Wilson on the phone and attempted to have him surrender peacefully.
However, Wilson responded, “I’m done with this.”
35-year-old Officer Matthew Kravetz and 39-year-old Officer Andrews Buckland located Wilson as he exited his apartment after the call. The two demanded Wilson to drop the weapon, but Yatomi said he refused.
Still armed, Wilson pointed the rifle’s muzzle at the two officers, forcing them to fire their weapons, hitting him.
Yatomi said Kravetz fired eight rounds, and Buckland fired 6 rounds.
Medical personnel responded and the suspect was declared dead at the scene. No police officers were injured.
Officer Kravetz has been employed with LVMPD since 2015, while Officer Buckland has been with LVMPD since 2017. Both are assigned to the Tourist Safety Division within the Downtown Area Command. Both officers have been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
If Wilson had survived, he would have faced two counts of assault with a deadly weapon against a protected person, one count of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of resisting an officer with a firearm.
