LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – It’s a success story for a boy with a passion for reading, who wanted to share that passion with his community.
After presenting the plan to the HOA and raising hundreds of dollars, 7-year-old Hunter Haidinyak has opened a ‘Free Little Library’ in his southwest valley neighborhood.
“We’ve spent a year working on this, and now it’s finally happening,” he said. “It’s something you can share and take books from.”
When 7-year-old Hunter found out that the nearest free little library was two miles away, he decided his neighborhood needed one of its own. He raised more than $900 on his GoFundMe campaign to get it done.
“First we had to do an HOA board meeting, then we had to build the actual library,” said Hunter.
Finally, the grand opening of the Free Little Library was held Saturday. Hunter’s elementary school principal even stopped by to donate a few books of her own.
“I’m inspired,” said Frias Elementary School Principal Jeannine Anderson. “For someone as young as Hunter to take the initiative and bring this to his community, it’s just a testament to his family and what he does and demonstrates in school every day.”
“Most of the libraries I’ve seen had a lot of adult books and just a few children’s books, but I want to make sure that this one will have a lot of children’s books as well,” said Hunter.
Hunter’s job doesn’t end here. He’s also tasked with maintaining the library, making sure it’s stocked and ready to help curious minds explore the world of reading.
Hunter’s mom Mae Haidinyak told FOX5, “Because he’s the one who put it up, he’s going to be super excited and checking on it all the time, and then he’s got tons of books that he’ll want to either put in or get out. He loves to read.”
