LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – 15 boats were destroyed and two docks suffered damage in a fire at a Lake Mead marina this weekend.
According to the National Park Service, the fire broke out at Las Vegas Boat Harbor Marina around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday. Once several agencies responded, it took hours for multiple agencies to contain it.
Officials reported 15 boats damaged or destroyed in the blaze.
Witnesses told FOX5 that they were forced to evacuate their boats when the fire started, and some did not have time to grab personal belongings. Some left without knowing whether their boat was burned or spared.
The marina notified boat owners about their boat conditions, and some told FOX5 that they came to the marina themselves Sunday morning to inspect the damage.
The marina remains open to the public, but a partial closure has been ordered for the harbor’s R and I docks. Additionally, visitors are urged to be cautious near Hemenway Harbor and the open portions of Las Vegas Boat Harbor due to potential safety concerns.
Boaters tell FOX5 that caution tape restricts them from accessing the area where the fire happened.
The marina posted this statement on Facebook:
NPS confirmed that an investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing.
