LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – FOX5 just returned to a speeding hotspot in the Las Vegas Valley.
We saw many cars speeding on Sunset, which runs parallel to runways at Harry Reid International Airport.
“I think everybody is in a hurry these days,” said Dan Romeyn.
Romeyn was visiting a Sunset business as FOX5 was checking speeds with a speed gun. At first, many cars were driving the speed limit, or just under it, which is 45 miles per hour. But as we continued to watch, speeds increased. We saw some drivers going 50, 59 and even 66 miles an hour, which was the top speed we observed.
One business complained to FOX5 when we visited a couple years ago, saying it was frustrated with speeders and some crashes. Back then, Boulder City officials confirmed to FOX5 that law enforcement saw our story and it prompted a speeding enforcement measure on Sunset. Boulder City Police said they clocked one driver going 87 miles per hour on the long stretch of road next to runways. Police cited the driver.
Local law enforcement is now teaming up for a “Joining Forces” enforcement event around the valley. From now until June 21, law agencies will be cracking down on speeders. In July they will focus on people driving impaired. In August agencies will work to keep pedestrians safe.
