LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A survey wants your input on traffic, parking and overall congestion in Las Vegas’ Chinatown as tourism surges in the corridor and businesses want solutions to a growing problem: customers having trouble finding parking.
Locals, tourists and small businesses can fill out the Inspiring Spring Mountain survey to weigh in.
“A lot of the community members say that parking is the top priority. There’s a lot of traffic accidents that happen on Spring Mountain Road. Its not safe for the visitors who come to this area,” said Minjia Yan with the Inspiring Spring Mountain project.
“A lot of customers are also complaining about the parking issue, which will be hurting the small businesses here, if they don’t have a lot of customers coming back to visit their restaurants again,” Yan said.
A popular meme about the problem in various Chinatown shopping centers has been made popular by local influencer “Vegas Issues”: on a busy Friday night, customers run late to their engagements while circling parking lots for a coveted spot.
Even on a weeknight, FOX5 can see vehicles in Shanghai Plaza circle the lot numerous times as customers search for any available parking.
Sit-down restaurant Weera Thai Kitchen said customers occasionally give up finding parking and leave.
“Customers call: ‘It’s hard to find parking, so I cannot park. I have to go to the other restaurant,’” said general manager Wiritpol Pungnem. “Customer opinion is to expand more parking for the customer,” he said, noting that a parking structure would help customers of second-floor businesses.
FOX5 reported on the efforts to make Chinatown into a redevelopment area, which could be approved sometime this summer. Property taxes could fund improvements such as crosswalks, sidewalk expansion, and even parking garages or shuttles for customers.
Yan said leaders would like the improvements to be driven by community input. “My team will be boots on the ground hearing community feedback,” she said.
The team has the following in-person events to garner community feedback:
June 8 & 15, 12PM – 7PM: Urban Matcha Cafe, 3400 South Jones Boulevard #3, Las Vegas NV 89146
June 7, 14 & 21, 5PM – 8PM: Chinatown Plaza, 4206 Spring Mountain Road, Las Vegas NV 89102
June 22, 11AM – 2PM: Pot Master Wagyu Bites, 4300 Spring Mountain Road #103, Las Vegas NV 89102
