LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Clark County School District’s Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6-10, but without parent organizations to set up events, teachers at some CCSD schools may not get the recognition they deserve.
So, one parent and substitute teacher is calling on the community to ensure every educator feels appreciated this week.
Stephanie Valdez created a spreadsheet for CCSD’s Teacher Appreciation Week, which currently lists 28 schools.
“They should feel special, they should know that they matter,” she said. “I think that education is a community issue, and I’m hoping that the community will step up and show up for our teachers.”
She says many CCSD schools don’t have a parent organization, so those schools can add their names, and community members or businesses can sign up to sponsor them.
“Community members can reach out to the contact person and coordinate something with them, and honestly, so many schools are like anything is appreciated.”
It’s a way to recognize our educators for their hard work and offer a much-needed boost for many. “Teachers have dealt with so much in this year alone. They have endured a lot of frustration. There is low teacher morale right now.”
After a long, drawn-out contract dispute between the district and the teachers’ union, many veteran educators still feel they’re not being fairly compensated. Valdez says support from the community is exactly what they need right now.
“There are some things that we can’t change, but showing up for our teachers is something we can do,” she said. “We can support them and let them know hey, if you don’t feel like the district or the union has your back, the community still does.”
19 schools on the spreadsheet still need sponsors for Teacher Appreciation Week. To see the contact information for each school, click here.
